We then install and compact the required stone base, followed by all necessary concrete improvements, including islands, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and dumpster pads.
Once the foundation is complete, our team installs the asphalt using modern paving equipment to ensure a smooth, durable finish. As a turnkey partner, we complete the project with striping, signage, bollards, and all required site fixtures.

Step 1: Stone Installation & Grading
Crown Paving hauls in, places, fine grades, and compacts the specified aggregate materials. Through a process known as wet setting, we ensure the stone base is properly seated and stabilized to create a strong foundation. We establish the proper grades and drainage patterns to direct water. The result is a durable, well-compacted foundation built for long-term performance.
Step 2: Concrete Curb & Flatwork Installation
With the stone base in place, Crown Paving installs all required concrete improvements, including curb and gutter, sidewalks, dumpster pads, loading docks, and other site flatwork. Each element is constructed to the project’s specifications and elevations to ensure proper drainage, functionality, and long-term durability. These concrete features define the finished layout of the site and prepare the project for the final asphalt paving phase.
Step 3: Asphalt Paving
With the foundation and concrete improvements complete, Crown Paving installs the asphalt using modern paving equipment and proven construction methods. What Goes Underneath New Asphalt?
A stone base, installed and compacted before any asphalt arrives. Crown Paving establishes it through meticulous stone installation, with wet setting and proof rolling to ensure a solid and stable foundation. Unlike typical maintenance contractors, Crown Paving has both the expertise and the equipment to build a new lot from the base up rather than subcontracting the part nobody sees.
What Is Proof Rolling?
A loaded vehicle is driven slowly across the compacted base while the surface is watched for movement. Anywhere the base deflects, pumps or ruts under the load is a soft spot, and it gets corrected before paving rather than after. It is the last chance to find a weakness while it is still cheap to fix, because the same soft spot found later is a failure in the finished surface.
How Thick Should a Commercial Parking Lot Be?
It depends on traffic loads and project specifications, so there is no single number. As a guide, base and binder layers typically run 2 to 4 inches or more and carry the structural strength, while the surface course is the thinnest layer at roughly 1 to 2 inches.
