Seal coating is preventative rather than corrective, and the order of operations is what makes it work. Cracks are cleaned out and filled first, because sealer bridges an open crack for a season and then splits along the same line. Only once the cracks are closed does the sealer go down, and then it does the job it is actually for: keeping water and UV off the binder that holds the asphalt together.

The photographs show that sequence. The cracking in one of them is linear and block cracking, the pattern that comes from age and thermal movement rather than from failure in the base underneath, and that is precisely the condition crack filling and seal coating are meant to address. Where the cracking is structural, sealing over it only hides it.
